Theme: History & Beyond

Main Topic: Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in Austin - 2002 to Today

Main Speaker: Jon-Erik Johnson & Keith McLaughlin

Keith McLaughlin is a Principal and Branch Manager for Direct Expansion Solutions' Austin office. In 2006 he was invited to join the HTS group, specifically to start a specialty products division focused on VRF technology.   Previously, Keith had a 14-year career with a domestic manufacturer focused on unitary DX systems.  When VRF showed up in the US market, the capabilities and technology were far beyond anything he had seen on these shores.  Inverter-driven compressors, amazingly long pipe runs, and no ancillary heat requirements, to name a few of the features.  After thoughtful evaluation, Keith knew he had to be part of the movement.  He and his partners launched DXS in Central Texas and then quickly moved into Houston, DFW, Toronto and most recently New England.

Jon-Erik Johnson was introduced to VRF in 2002 while working for Paschal-Harper, Inc.  He were a small rep firm that had been selling ductless mini-splits for a major Japanese manufacturer who was going to introduce VRF to the US market.  He promoted the technology for several years before finally starting to see sales of VRF -mainly “flipping” projects from traditional HVAC designs to VRF.  Currently, Jon-Erik is a sales engineer at Texas Air Systems where he continues to promote and sell VRF equipment.  Jon-Erik has been involved with many VRF projects in the Austin and South Texas market.  He visited Asia a few times and visited impressive VRF manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as some very large VRF installations there.  VRF is an exciting technology and Jon-Erik is proud to have been involved with it since the early days of its introduction to the US market.
