Hello Austin ASHRAE! Hope everyone has had a great start to the new year. To start up the year, we wanted to revisit some of the changes that have been going on with ASHRAE 15. First, in the technical session, Emma Hansen, EIT from DXS will be going over A2L refrigerants and design considerations for VRF. To continue these updates, we brought back ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Douglas Reindl, PhD, PE. Prof. Reindl joined us last year in the first half of the year and gave us an intro to some changes in ASHRAE 15. We are pleased to share that Prof. Reindl's main presentation will be: Understanding ASHRAE Standard 15 Requirements for Direct Systems in Comfort Cooling Applications. So come with lots of questions as we continue exploring changes to ASHRAE 15!
Main Presentation: Understanding ASHRAE Standard 15 Requirements for Direct Systems in Comfort Cooling Applications
This presentation introduces new requirements and methods in Standard 15 to address Class 2L flammable refrigerants intended for use in direct-refrigerant (high probability) systems in comfort cooling applications. Principles for calculating the effective dispersal volume charge (EDVC) will be presented and demonstrated with examples. Additional requirements and limitations for direct systems using Class 2L flammable refrigerants will also be discussed and compared with Class 1 refrigerants.
Meet the Speaker:

Douglas T. Reindl, Ph.D., P.E.
Douglas Reindl is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. Professor Reindl has taught at all levels: undergraduate, graduate, and continuing professional development. Professor Reindl has developed an internationally-recognized series of professional development courses focused on industrial refrigeration systems with an emphasis on the safe use of ammonia as a refrigerant. Through the IRC, Professor Reindl works with some of the world’s leading food companies to improve the safety, efficiency, reliability and productivity of industrial refrigeration systems and technologies.
Professor Reindl is an ASHRAE Fellow, a past recipient of ASHRAE’s Distinguished Service Award, and the first recipient of ASHRAE’s George C. Briley Award for the best refrigeration article in the ASHRAE Journal. He has served as a past chair and member of ASHRAE’s Standard 15 committee – Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems. Professor Reindl is a registered professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin.
Professor Reindl has published 6 books and more than 100 technical papers on topics including: industrial refrigeration, building mechanical systems, energy systems, indoor air quality (including research on SARS-CoV-2 transmission in buildings), and solar energy.
Tech Topic: ASHRAE 15 A2L Design Considerations for VRF
This presentation will be an overview of the new requirements and methods in Standard 15 to address A2L refrigerants intended for use in direct-refrigerant systems (specifically VRF). Principles for calculating the effective dispersal volume charge (EDVC) will be presented with examples. Additional requirements and limitations for VRF systems using A2L refrigerants will also be discussed.

Emma Hansen Martin, EIT
Emma works in engineering sales at Direct Expansion Solutions (DXS), where she combines her technical expertise with a passion for delivering effective HVAC solutions. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2020 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and has worked at DXS since graduation.
